As for those who strive in Us,

We surely guide them to Our paths (Quran)

In the following quotation, from the famous book Mu'jam al-Buldan (Dictionary of Countries) by Yaqut al-Hamawi, one example of such wars, which was between the Hanafi and the Shafi sects, is described:

“Then the Hanafis and the Shafis began fighting, the Shafis despite being less in number would always be victorious to the extent that the Hanafis of ar-Rustaq would come to aid their fellow Hanafis but to no avail. In the end only those from amongst the Shia and Shafis were saved who hid their Madhab and turned their houses into places of shelter and if they had not done this then no one would have been saved” (1).

"... وقعت العصبية بين الحنفية والشافعية، ووقعت بينهم حروب كان الظفر في جميعها للشافعية، هذا مع قلة عدد الشافعية، إلا أن الله نصرهم عليهم، وكان أهل الرستاق، وهم حنيفة، يجيئون إلى البلد بالسـلاح الشـاك ويساعـدون أهل نحلتهم فلم يغنهم ذلك شيئا حتى أفنوهم، فهذه المحال الخراب التى ترى هي محال الشيعة والحنفية، وبقيت هذه المحلة المعروفة بالشافعية وهى أصغر محال الرى ولم يبق من الشيعة والحنفية إلا من يخفى مذهبه، ووجدت دورهم كلها مبنية تحت الارض ودروبهم التى يسلك بها إلى دورهم على غاية الظلمة وصعوبة المسلك، فعلوا ذلك لكثرة ما يطرقهم من العساكر بالغارات ولولا ذلك لما بقى فها أحد" (1).

The History of Religious wars within Sunni Islam

From what was called the "Miḥnah (trial) of the created nature of the Qur'an", which was related to the attributes of Allah SWT, to the recent wahhabi Fitnah (trial), many religious wars between the Madhhabs (divisions) of the Sunni sect have occurred during the history of Islam.
