The Sunni historian, IbnulAthir, describing the massacre of the Shi'a of Ifriqiyyah (a region in North Africa around Tunisia-Libya) before more than 1000 years.

We found the following explanation of the attached scanned page, which was written in Reddit.com by a member called wakpa_kalusya, to be appropriate:

“Just an explanation as to what is in the scans here. The poster is quoting Al-Kamil Fi'l-Tarikh of Ibn Athir, regarding what he wrote about the events of the year AH 407, the massacre of the Shi'a of Ifriqiyyah (a region in North Africa around Tunisia-Libya). This event I find significant that was pretty infamous as it is among one of the massacres that Sunnis committed against the Shi'as before the advent of Ibn Taymiyyah, Ibn Abdu'l-Wahab, and the modern Wahabi state, effectively showing the true sentiments classical Sunnism itself had/has against Shiism. And keep in mind it is only one of a number of such events (another that I can think off the top of my mind is when the Ottoman Mufti ruled that killing one Rafidhi (Shi'a) makes Jannahincumbent upon you).

The event itself states how Mu'izz ibn Idris, who was the then ruler of Ifriqiyya, ordered in Muharram of AH 407 the death of the Rafidha because they have blasphemed against Abu Bakr and Umar. And they were burnt to death and had their property plundered. This effectively wiped out the presence of the Shi'a in Ifriqiyya…”

سنة 407 هـ:

وفيها: كما قال ابن الأثير: في المحرّم قتلت الشيعة بجميع بلاد إفريقية، وكان سبب ذلك أنّ المعزّ بن باديس ركب ومشى في القيروان والناس يسلّمون عليه ويدعون له، فاجتاز بجماعة، فسأل عنهم؟ فقيلك هؤلاء رافضة يسبّون أبا بكر وعمر، فقال: رضي الله عنه أبي بكر وعمر، فانصرفت العامّة من فورها إلى درب المقلى من القيروان ـ وهو مكان تجتمع به الشيعة ـ فقتلوا منهم، وكان ذلك شهوة العسكر وأتباعهم طمعاً في النهب، وانبسطت أيدي العامة في الشيعة، وأغراهم عامل القيران وحرّضهم، وسبب ذلك انه كان قد اصلح أمور البلد، فبلغه أن المعزّ بن باديس يريد عزله، فاراد فساده، فقتل من الشيعة خلق كثير، وأحرقوا بالنار، ونهبت ديارهم، وقتلوا في جميع إفريقية، واجتمع جماعة منهم إلى قصر المنصور قريب القيروان، فتحصّنوا به، فحصرهم العامة وضيّقوا عليهم، فاشتدّ عليهم

الجوع، فأقبلوا يخرجون والناس يقتلونهم! حتّى قتلوا عن آخرهم!!! ولجأ من كان منهم بالمهدية إلى الجامع، فقتلوا كلّهم.

وأكثر الشعراء ذكروا هذه الحادثة، فمن فرحٍ مسروٍ، ومن باكٍ حزينٍ.
